Who: 10th Ranked UNLV battles 20th ranked Midland University, out of Nebraska, in a two game series this weekend… the only matchups between the two teams this season.

What: UNLV comes into this game off a pair of dominating wins vs. Utah, where the team scored 17 goals over the two games. Paxton Malone led the way with four goals (including a hat trick Saturday night). Nick Flanders scored his first collegiate goal in Saturday’s contest as well.  UNLV is riding a five game winning streak and has an 8-1 record overall.

Midland comes in to Las Vegas having split their first two home games of the season vs. Maryville University. Midland has gotten off to a good start, beginning with a 5-2 record (4-1 on the road). Included in that was three wins in Colorado against Colorado State and Colorado to begin the year.

Where: Both games take place at City National arena, where UNLV is 6-0 so far this season. Start time for both nights is 7pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at rebelhockey.com or at the door at City National Arena. Also, those who come to tonight’s game will be entered to win tickets to a Vegas Golden Knights game at T-Mobile Arena. However, if you preorder tickets for tonight’s game, you will receive a second raffle ticket, increasing your chances to win. And you must be present at the game to win.

When: The last time these two teams played each other was during the 2017-2018 season, UNLV’s first season at the D1 level.  They battled at T-Mobile Arena on February 16, 2018, a meeting won by UNLV. The next night (February 17th, 2018), the two teams played back at City National Arena and Midland defeated the Rebels 7-2, in what was probably one of the most lopsided losses UNLV has suffered at City National Arena.

Why: (you should watch these games)

  1. Both teams are ranked and will be looking to build the resume for ACHA national tournament in March.
  2. Last home games at City National Arena until beginning of December. After this weekend, UNLV will play the next seven games throughout the end of October and all of November on the road, with stops in Chicago, North Dakota and Tucson, Arizona along the way.
  3. If you come to the game tonight, you have a chance to win VGK tickets.

 How:  (Rebels can defeat Midland)

Midland is led so far this season with top scorers Andrew Carriere, with five goals and six assists for 11 points, as well as Hampish Campbell, who leads in goals with six, mixed in with four assists for ten points.  Five Warriors players overall have already recorded double digit points through seven games (Colton Jones, Luke Sanko and Fletcher Chun all have at least ten points.) So keeping these guys off the scoreboard will go a long way to increase the chances for Skatin’ Rebels victories this weekend.

In net for Midland, Dakota Mcdonald has been brilliant in net in his four starts. Despite a 2-2 record, he has amassed an impressive 2.22 Goals against average and a .880 save percentage. The most impressive performance for Mcdonald came in their first game of the season in Fort Collins on September 19th, a game which saw him make forty eight saves on forty nine CSU shots in 65:00 minutes of action, for a 2-1 shootout win. So, he has proven he can handle a barrage of shots that UNLV will likely give him if he starts any of these games this weekend.

Those who are unable to attend the game can follow along on UNLV Hockey on social media. Both games will also be streamed live on the UNLV Hockey You-Tube channel.
